Work

Here, you’ll find materials from some of the projects I worked on during my time at two international design studios based in the Netherlands.

Design2Gather

Work_D2G_01

All-round designer

July 2019 – June 2021

Design2Gather is a dynamic hands-on product design studio, with a passion for innovation, change, and creativity. With studios in Hong-Kong, Shanghai, and Eindhoven, Design2Gather creates novel items that are valued by users and turn into commercial success for their clients.

I joined the studio in Eindhoven in Juli 2019 and worked there in close collaboration with the Shanghai office. Working on a large variety of challenging and intriguing projects, as a project lead and team member. Tasks include new product design development – from sketch to prototype production and graphical design work.

Most development and project progress is not shown for confidentiality reasons.

All work shown is produced by me unless indicated otherwise.

Design process

All-round designer

As a designer with little experience, I was assigned project lead after my first two months, during my time here I have always guided two interns and led multiple small design teams.

I experienced each aspect of the design progress using the D2G design methodology as shown above. For most projects I was challenged to find new approaches and work using new software, learning new programs and skills during each project.

Low pressure wok

Concept development

I worked alongside the senior design team during various stages of projects.

Developing concepts, ideating, and optimizing in collaboration with the team in Shanghai.

I developed the concept for a low-pressure wok for the Chinese market, focusing on the interaction and intent of the user. Creating prototypes, 3D models, and renders for testing and presenting to the client.

Creating an intuitive and unique concept and communicating all aspects clearly to the client.

The low-pressure wok has been brought to market and has been internationally recognized winning both a Design Intelligence award and an IF Design award in 2023.

Ideation and initial concepts

For this project I took the load from the team in Shanghai, creating three unique concepts in a short period of time.

Presenting all ideas and functions in three condensed concepts to make quick progress.

Establishing project drivers, finding idea directions that can set the product apart in their catagory.

I created 3 concepts in a short amount of time, giving each concept a unique main feature and variating secondary features to help the client make quick decisions to make up for lost time.

Dispenser

Wearable Hand-sanitizer dispenser

Project lead for complete design process

Managing a small design team and close client involvement, creating a wearable hand-sanitizer dispenser focussed on an under-represented market position.

Establishing project drivers with the client, breaking down the requirements to adjust the focus of the project. Here we establish new requirements and started the ideation phase.

With a very limited timeline simplification and rapid prototyping were key to make quick decisions.

Testing and validating in steps to create clear decision points supported by the project drivers to help the client make informed decisions.

During the concept phase, I developed multiple iterations of the design and presented these on various levels to the client.

Focussing on the clients’ visions and developing the design of the product accordingly.

The final product was designed with production in mind. The configuration was established based on materials, production methods and most important user interaction.

A 3D printed version for small production quantity is currently being sold to raise funds for mass production.

With the client, I established the brand for the product, including the logo, packaging, promotional material and all graphic material.

Stationary set

Stationary set

Project lead for complete design process

I designed a stationery product set featuring a stapler, utility knife and scissor for a large Chinese stationery company. Designing a set in a matching style based on a predetermined style and target audience.

Exploring and identifying unique opportunities for added user interaction and functionality.

Developing concepts with scheduled client meetings, optimizing the 3d for production and usability.

In house concept

This internal project started from a graduation project from a designer previously working for deseign2gather. It went through multiple itterations by multiple different designers since. This project had multiple problems including, production costs, overall design and most importantly poor user-interaction. I was tasked to address these issues and create a new improved concept.

Ideating and prototyping different technical solutions and aesthetics whenever there was time free or need for a change of pace to redirect my mind.

I redesigned the technical solution to minimise parts and production costs, whilst improving user interaction.

This project is always evolving and is set to be acquired by an external party, for which it will be adjusted and designed for a better aesthetic fit.

Quick concept

For project acquisition, I worked on creating multiple quick product concepts for potential clients. With a focus on client interaction and showcasing our capabilities as a studio. These quick projects show our process and how we can enhance a product and create new opportunities.

With a simple idea from the client I set out to create a proof of concept.

V1: More focussed on all the ideas the client requested, overcomplicated with production and useabilty issues.

V2: In less than a week I created a fully realised product showing the client the potential of a new dynamic partnership. Focussed on combining new product innovation with our excisting partnership. Using renders, presentation and fully functional prototypes to educate the client about the process and create an opening for a partnership with more direct involvement in the complete process.

Wearable vibrator

The initial product designer set up the overall design and structure of the device, but they did not take into account the production and components.

As the project lead, my task was to source components and make adjustments for production. However, the project exceeded the allocated time when I started, which meant there was no time for any design adjustments beyond what was absolutely necessary.

I sourced all electronic components including the PCB and the programming thereof and redesigned the vibrator to hold these components.

With close involvement of the client, I established the colour, material and finish of the product using rendering and digital visualisations. I also created the Red Dot application document for Design Concept in 2020 and other promotional material.

One of the big challenges during this project was how to present and explain the product to the outside world, and managing the clients’ involvement.

I designed all graphic material and the packaging for the product.

Currently for sale in their online store, and ready for distribution in Europe.

Packaging

Packaging

packaging design

I worked on multiple packaging projects. One of which I designed the packaging for a charging bracelet, exploring graphics that visualize the style and function of the bracelet.

Ideating and designing packaging structure, focussed on user interaction and introduction to the product. Providing the client with different directions and refining the graphics through multiple itterations.

Creating prototypes, 3D models and provide all die-cut files for production.

Retail

Retail

retail design

I worked on multiple retail projects, varying from in store display design and promotional materials to rebranding packaging and complete store visualisations.

Designing the graphics and creating a visual impression for the in-store display of the leading Dutch tv-mount producers. Creative workshops with the company were used to find direction and style. Set for use with all dealers in 2021.

Providing the client with quick ideation visualisations to find direction and restrictions regarding to in store rules and regulations.

One of the projects included redesigning the fresh isle of a high end supermarket in Shanghai. They have since implemented the redesign in all four locations based on the guidelines I created.

The work also included visualisations and guideance of reorganisations of retail space. Working with the client to create the best balance between product higharchie set by the client and user experience.

In less than a week I created a concept brand together with my team.

Creating multiple directions with graphical and branding, visualising each variation and presenting to the client.

The final brand was used to promote the new vegan meat developed by one of the leading meat producers of europe.

I worked on a large variety of projects small and large creating a wide range of products, brands, graphic materials, packaging and retail spaces.
